About the Vacant Building Program
Historic Home Specialist: Unique San Antonio | Topic: Vacant Building Program
Course Description:
This class will focus on the Vacant Building Program (VBP), highlighting its role in addressing vacant properties, enhancing public safety, and promoting economic development. Participants will learn about the registration process, maintenance requirements, and recent program updates. Additionally, this training equips real estate professionals with essential knowledge of how the program impacts property transactions. Realtors will learn how to navigate program requirements, assist clients in compliance, and leverage opportunities for revitalization and sales. Through case studies and expert insights, participants will gain practical strategies to work effectively with local authorities, property owners, and investors.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Explain the Vacant Building Program and Its Impact – Understand the purpose, regulations, and enforcement mechanisms of the program, as well as its effects on property values and community revitalization.
Guide Clients Through Compliance and Opportunities – Assist property owners and buyers in meeting program requirements, connecting with City resources, and accessing incentives for redevelopment.
Engage with Key Stakeholders – Build relationships with city officials, investors, and community organizations to streamline transactions and support neighborhood revitalization efforts.

Resources & City Processes
Historic Preservation is about telling the story of our city, neighborhoods, and homes. As a community, we preserve so that we can strengthen neighborhoods, build the local economy, provide economic, cultural, and environmental sustainability, create jobs, and tell the story of San Antonio.
You will learn about the design review process and resources for you to share with your clients. Experts will help to dispel myths about owning historic property. During the course, our team will teach you terminology about architectural styles and district context so that you will be prepped to market any house!
After completing the course, you will be prepared to confidently market historic properties and you will become the expert leader for your buyers and sellers.
This is one of the three classes needed for the Historic House Certification.

Genealogy of a House
We will discuss how to research and share the history of a home. This course will demonstrate how to access resources available online that can help establish a construction date, find a builder/developer/architect, identify previous residents and owners, and more. We will take a deep dive into building research so that you can be a valuable resource to your clients and uncover San Antonio’s history.
