Project background

New street design:

This project made the following changes:

On MLK Jr Street from Division Avenue to Sheldon Avenue, the project maintained two through lanes and a dedicated left turn lane onto Division Avenue and remove the dedicated right-turn lane onto Division Avenue.

On MLK Jr Street from Sheldon Avenue to Fuller Avenue, the project maintained the parking lane on the south side of the street and removed the parking lane on the north side.

On MLK Jr Street from Fuller Avenue to just east of Ethel Avenue/Iroquois Drive, the project maintained the parking lane on the north side of the street and removed the parking lane on the south side.

On MLK Jr Street from just east of Ethel Avenue/Iroquois Drive to Cadillac Drive, the project maintained the parking lane on the south side of the street and removed the parking lane on the north side.

The project also:

  • Upgraded sidewalks and curb ramps to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
  • Placed new water main and replaced 30 lead water services with new copper water services into properties on MLK Jr Street from Fuller Avenue to the east city limits near Cadillac Drive.
  • Made minor improvements to the storm sewer system, which handles storm water. Stormwater is rainwater or water from melting snow or ice. The stormwater system includes catch basins (the grates found periodically along curbs) that collect the water from the street and carry it into a main line.
  • Installed bicycle lanes on both sides of MLK Jr St adding 1.8 miles to the City's bicycle network.
  • Planted 114 new street trees.
  • Removed existing bulb-outs and installed new bulb-outs at some intersections to shorten the street crossing width for people walking, better define parking lanes, and slow traffic speeds.
