Introduction

The City of Grand Rapids works to create a safe environment through the use of temporary traffic devices. The Mobile GR Department partners with residents to implement street improvements that help slow vehicle speedsenhance safety, and create more livable neighborhoods. These short-term installations allow the City to collect data, observe real-world conditions, and gather public feedback before deciding on potential permanent design changes.

This page outlines how the process works, provides updates on active projects, and gives you an opportunity to share feedback on proposals in your neighborhood.

Examples of Temporary Traffic Installations

Mobile GR deploys a variety of temporary tools and materials to test how changes affect traffic flow and safety. Examples include:

  • Traffic Circles – Reduce vehicle speeds, lower crash severity, and improve comfort for people walking and biking.

  • Bump-Outs (Curb Extensions) – Shorten crossing distances for pedestrians and help slow turning vehicles.

  • Fencing or Barriers – Used to discourage illegal parking and better define safe pedestrian areas.

  • Pedestrian–Vehicle Separation Barriers – Create a physical buffer between sidewalks and traffic lanes to increase safety and comfort.
