Welcome to the Harry L. Jones, Sr. Golf Course public input webpage, formally the Renaissance Park Golf Course.  The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners approved a request to rename this course for the former County Manager on June 6, 2017. The 18-hole course was designed by Michael Hurdzan and opened in 1987 as a reclamation project on the former York Road Landfill.  Having been constructed on a landfill, the course has seen some maintenance challenges throughout the years.

The County recognized the deteriorating state of the facility and began execution of a potential Five Phase Plan. 

Phase 1: Preliminary Evaluation and Engineering Assessment – 100% Complete - August 2017

Phase 2: Evaluation and Engineering Assessment and Golf Course Renovation – 100% Complete - October 2018

Phase 3: Engineering and Detailed Golf Course Redesign – 25% Complete - Estimated completion October 2022

Phase 4: Bid and Construct Golf Course Redesign – Not currently funded

Phase 5: Monitoring of Golf Course

Phase 1 was executed in 2017, when SCS Engineers were contracted to complete a ‘Preliminary Evaluation and Engineering Assessment’ of the facility.  The objective of Phase 1 was to develop an overall Existing Conditions Site Plan that is reflective of the current site conditions, overlaid on key golf course features.  The findings of this report led the County to move on to Phase 2, an ‘Evaluation and Engineering Assessment and Golf Course Renovation’.  Phase 2 consisted of subsurface investigation of the property to gain a better grasp of the landfill impact. The County is currently in Phase 3 of this process, which is the complete redesign of the golf course, factoring in the information from Phase 1 and 2.  In this process a golf course design company, Ronald M. Garl Golf Course Design, Inc., will work closely with SCS Engineers to design a course that will utilize the strengths of the property while minimize any weaknesses.
